We are delighted to welcome Ine Van Son to the Vienne this autumn.
Van Son is a Dutch contemporary artist working with site specific and constructed textiles across varied media which include ceramics, photography and the moving image.
Her intention is to make people think about the (material and immaterial) realities hiding in the details that surround us. To think about the subtle meanings hidden in the non-visible but still perceptible world.
She writes, "Often I use textiles as the base material; the material I grew-up with, with which I saw my mother working, which my grandmother had worked and which for many people carries so many internal associations"
Her work contains hidden narratives which offer suggestions or hints at the image behind or within them. The form emerges from the narrative, using the media which best fits. It can take the form of photo-collage, assemblage, film/moving image and (most often) textiles.
"I work associatively; I focus on a certain detail that pushes me on. That may be a colour, a form, a piece of material, an atmosphere or a memory. From that point images arise all of which, hold and transport a story with in."
Van Son’s work is both sensory; she uses all her sensitivities to feel her way into and dialogue with her surrounds and materials. Listening and feeling intensely and allowing herself to be guided by her environment, "taking in the atmosphere and history as a starting point"
Her works vary in scale as well as material, some very delicate; hand woven yarns and lichen, some large enough for the visitor to walk in and through : totally immersive spaces, always site specific and always with an empathy and submersion into and with the locale; beautiful nuanced interventions, all of which contain a living and separate presence.
Her 2021 project, 'Women's Hands' which took place as part of the Textile festival Twente is a perfect example of her memory based works, which shift temporality and renew legacies almost tangible and almost forgotten.

Van Son est une artiste contemporaine hollandaise qui travaille avec des textiles in situ et construits à travers des médias variés comme la céramique, la photographie et l'image en mouvement. Son intention est de faire réfléchir les gens sur les réalités (matérielles et immatérielles) qui se cachent dans les détails qui nous entourent. Elle écrit : "J'utilise souvent les textiles comme matériau de base ; le matériau avec lequel j'ai grandi, avec lequel j'ai vu ma mère travailler, avec lequel ma grand-mère avait travaillé et qui, pour beaucoup de gens, comporte tant d'associations internes".
Son travail contient des récits cachés qui offrent des suggestions ou des allusions à l'image qui se cache derrière ou à l'intérieur. La forme émerge de la narration, en utilisant le média qui convient le mieux. Elle peut prendre la forme de photo-collage, d'assemblage, de film/image animée et (le plus souvent) de textiles.
"Je travaille de manière associative ; je me concentre sur un détail qui me pousse à agir. Il peut s'agir d'une couleur, d'une forme, d'un morceau de matière, d'une atmosphère ou d'un souvenir. “
Le travail de Van Son est à la fois sensoriel ; elle utilise toutes ses sensibilités pour se frayer un chemin et dialoguer avec son environnement et ses matériaux.
Elle écoute et ressent intensément et se laisse guider par son environnement, " en prenant l'atmosphère et l'histoire comme point de départ ".
Ses œuvres varient en termes d'échelle et de matériaux, certaines sont très délicates ; des fils et du lichen tissés à la main, d'autres sont assez grandes pour que le visiteur puisse marcher dedans et à travers : des espaces totalement immersifs, toujours spécifiques au site et toujours avec une empathie et une immersion dans et avec le lieu ; de belles interventions nuancées, qui contiennent toutes une présence vivante et distincte.
Son projet 2021 "Women's Hands", qui s'est déroulé dans le cadre du festival textile de Twente, est un parfait exemple de ses œuvres basées sur la mémoire, qui déplacent la temporalité et renouvellent des héritages presque tangibles et presque oubliés.
