West Coast Lab - in the studio laboratory with Irish artist Ruth Le Gear.

The water samples gathered and bottled by the ATELIER MELUSINE team as part of the long distance residency with Ruth Le Gear were sent in two batches to her studio in the west-coast of Ireland.
The first samples; 1 - 5 arrived safely, with the exception of sample 5, which shattered shortly before delivery (a particularly interesting location) at the point of writing - Juneteenth 2021 - the second batch, numbers 6 - 9, plus a replacement sample of number five are in transit.

Le Gear has begun working with the waters, with some wonderful, emerging results.
The trials have been semi-blind; Annett and Le Gear initially corresponding about methods of site selection, the final outcome being that Le Gear sent Annett to 4 specific locations to collect water, or as near to the map co-ordinates as Annett could find fresh water. Annett then selected five undisclosed, additional sites to gather the samples.

“My work uses experiential and geographic research to express the innate power of water. I work primarily as a hybrid artist working at the interface of nature, water intervention, and environmental art. My work finds form in moving image, the still image, sound and installation.

I make essences from water. 

I have collected icebergs in the Arctic from a tall ship, wandered thedesert of New Mexico and stood on the tip of the Cape of Good Hope. In these places and wherever I am, my intention is always to try to communicate with the water that is there, this most beautiful life-giving force of nature.
Each body of water is totally unique. It has its own physicaland spiritual history, its own mineral content, and its own unique vibration that it imparts onliving beings that it encounters. If you’ve ever had a drink from a crystal clear mountain stream,one from an ancient well or swum in the sea, you will know that all water is not the same.

 My life’s work is to understand and communicate with water. 

I explore it, in all its layers, the tinymicro-organisms that live in one drop, the huge oceans, and ocean creatures, lakes. rivers, clouds,mist, rain, sleet, hale, icebergs, and glaciers. I live on the North West coast of Ireland and it rains here a lot, mostly pure North Atlantic water, swept up in the storms above Greenland and Iceland. 

Working with the Sally Annett and the Women and Water project has been an exercise in love and trust. 

I have had to step back from my practice and look at my intuitive methodologies as best I can and translate this essentialized personal ritual into transpersonal action: into words and directions for Sally, creating a set of instructions of sorts. It has been such an incredibly instructive and reflexive experience and I am learning about elements of my practice which had been invisible to me before.
In my studio, I study the water samples that I’ve collected on my travels. Spend time with them, contemplate with and meditate on them. I listen deeply allowing intuition to bridge an unknowable chasm to begin communication with the waters. 
And slowly, the essenceof the water is unraveled. Then I take a small amount of the water, which holds all of its history and potential, and make an essence, this is then translated through video, drawing and sound.

West Coast Lab - dans le laboratoire de l'atelier avec l'artiste irlandaise Ruth Le Gear.
Les échantillons d'eau recueillis et mis en bouteille par l'équipe de l'ATELIER MELUSINE dans le cadre de la résidence à distance avec Ruth Le Gear ont été envoyés en deux lots à son atelier sur la côte ouest de l'Irlande.
Les premiers échantillons, de 1 à 5, sont arrivés sans encombre, à l'exception de l'échantillon 5 qui s'est brisé peu avant la livraison (un endroit particulièrement intéressant) au moment où nous écrivons ces lignes - le 19 juin 2021 - le deuxième lot, les numéros 6 à 9, plus un échantillon de remplacement du numéro 5, est en transit.
Le Gear a commencé à travailler avec les eaux, avec des résultats merveilleux et émergents.
Les essais se sont déroulés en semi-aveugle ; Annett et Le Gear ont d'abord échangé sur les méthodes de sélection des sites, le résultat final étant que Le Gear a envoyé Annett à 4 endroits spécifiques pour collecter de l'eau, ou aussi près des coordonnées de la carte qu'Annett pouvait trouver de l'eau douce. Annett a ensuite sélectionné cinq sites supplémentaires non divulgués pour recueillir les échantillons.

"Mon travail s'appuie sur des recherches expérientielles et géographiques pour exprimer le pouvoir inné de l'eau. Je travaille principalement en tant qu'artiste hybride à l'interface de la nature, de l'intervention sur l'eau et de l'art environnemental. Mon travail prend forme dans l'image en mouvement, l'image fixe, le son et l'installation. J'ai ramassé des icebergs dans l'Arctique à bord d'un grand navire, j'ai erré dans le désert du Nouveau-Mexique et je me suis tenu sur la pointe du Cap de Bonne-Espérance. Dans ces endroits et où que je sois, mon intention est toujours d'essayer de communiquer avec l'eau qui se trouve là, cette force de la nature qui donne la vie la plus belle. Chaque masse d'eau est totalement unique. Elle a sa propre histoire physique et spirituelle, son propre contenu minéral et sa propre vibration unique qu'elle transmet aux êtres vivants qu'elle rencontre. Si vous avez déjà bu l'eau d'un ruisseau de montagne limpide, celle d'un puits ancien ou nagé dans la mer, vous savez que toutes les eaux ne sont pas identiques.

L'œuvre de ma vie consiste à comprendre l'eau et à communiquer avec elle. Je l'explore, dans toutes ses couches, les micro-organismes qui vivent dans une goutte, les immenses océans, les créatures océaniques, les lacs, les rivières, les nuages, la brume, la pluie, le grésil, le vent, les icebergs et les glaciers. J'habite sur la côte nord-ouest de l'Irlande et il pleut beaucoup ici, principalement de l'eau pure de l'Atlantique Nord, emportée par les tempêtes au-dessus du Groenland et de l'Islande. 

Travailler avec Sally Annett et le projet Women and Water a été un exercice d'amour et de confiance. J'ai dû prendre du recul par rapport à ma pratique et examiner mes méthodologies intuitives du mieux que je pouvais et traduire ce rituel personnel essentialisé en action transpersonnelle : en mots et en directives pour Sally, créant ainsi une sorte d'ensemble d'instructions. C'est une expérience incroyablement instructive et réflexive et j'apprends des éléments de ma pratique qui m'étaient auparavant invisibles.Dans mon studio, j'étudie les échantillons d'eau que j'ai recueillis au cours de mes voyages. Je passe du temps avec eux, je les contemple et je médite sur eux. J'écoute profondément, permettant à l'intuition de combler un gouffre inconnu et de commencer à communiquer avec les eaux. Et lentement, l'essence de l'eau est démêlée. Puis je prends une petite quantité d'eau, qui contient toute son histoire et son potentiel, et j'en fais une essence, qui est ensuite traduite par la vidéo, le dessin et le son.

The Process

The samples collected by Annett and the ATELIER MELUSINE team arrived in Ireland in two batches, in May and June in 2021. Sample 5 broke on the first delivery and had to be resent, arriving safely at the second attempt. Le Gear was able to start working with the waters immediately, documenting the process of dialoguing with them in the studio/lab and recording her responses to them textually and audio-visually.

After several weeks work Le Gear made her final selection of three samples/sites, whose locations (at point of writing 17/07/2021) remain unknown to her, the final water locations are currently known as 1, 4 and 5.
The samples are altered in Le Gear’s lab by a method, which remains undisclosed here, and then returned to Annett, in France, who will work with their biochemical structure at little more, following Le Gear’s precise instructions. She will then travel to the three original collections points, the waters will be thanked and returned the waters in their new state to their source, changing them immediately.

The effect of returning the samples to the original source point subsequently alters the samples in the Irish lab and the final remedies will be developed.
Le Gear then transforms them into glass sculptures and jewelry; the waters encased in glass, they become ‘wearable waters’.

Annett, Perkins and Annett-Parish who collected the waters for Le Gear were offered a specific remedy to accompany the works and accepted and Le Gear work from photographic portraits to select the specific restorative for each one. The remedies will be sent with the treated water samples.

Le Gear writes (2021),
”When I create remedies from the water, collected at particular sites, then that water needs to be returned as a water remedy to that place. This creates a beginning, a returning of the waters to itself, a catalyst for healing in many places. The healing has nothing to do with me, and everything to do with my relationship to Spirit. The more I move myself (and my ego) out of the way, the more powerful the work is. I take this as a start point and then I take the remedy, in a way ingesting the energy of the landscape and I bring the remedy through in a very meditative, shamanic way.
This was the beginning of working with video and photography, translating this way of seeing to others and trying to get them to see the landscape as a living being, not just something that is there to take from or benefit from.
Some remedies then reach a point after the landwork where they can be used with humans.”

It helps with deep grief which is held within the energetic system and allows it to be released in a very supportive way. It brings a balance of fear and peace within oneself ... As an essence, it activates suspended pure light energy held within an individual releasing the light potential within oneself … This essence helps to bring clarity to the mind. It helps with fatigue, exhaustion and enables deep rest...”
