My uncle, Francis Annett, has lived and worked in Middlesborough for many years and when I saw this event coming up, knowing some of the artists, I messaged him with the details and he replied to say that he was going already. I asked if he could take some images so that we could run a short piece on the project as I know he supports and promotes the arts and culture in the North East and this is a great contemporary painting show for Middlesborough.   It transpired, unbeknown to me, that he already knew and had worked with Gordon Dalton previously – I had no idea :)

“Mountain Size features artists from the Contemporary British Painting membership, selected by CBP board member, Gordon Dalton (Creative Factory). The exhibition features UK artists whose work has a relationship to landscape, from coast to country, or as a more abstract inspiration. The landscape is a starting point, a subject matter, before the spontaneity, contradiction and decision making begins and the delicate matter of pushing ‘coloured mud around with a hairy stick.’

All the painters involved relate directly to the history, legacy and traditions of painting itself. This does not mean they are divorced from the wider realities around us or a fruitful critical dialogue with other art forms, but that painting itself is important.  Large paintings, small paintings, paintings of ‘things’, for these artists, painting itself is mountain sized, a large, seemingly immovable force yet one that is changeable with time, history and the world around us.”

This is a really interesting selection of paintings which range from abstracted pieces in various scales, through the exploration of landscape as surface envisioned through pattern and colllage into technically brilliant, representational works. The influences of British and European painting are evident and referenced but with a contemporary academic thoughtfulness which provides a linguistic intentsity and a love of the medium which allows for deep contemplation of its continuing impact.

Contemporary British Painting is an artist led organisation which explores and promotes current trends in British painting through group exhibitions, talks, publications and the donation of paintings to art museums.

Mon oncle, Francis Annett, vit et travaille à Middlesborough depuis de nombreuses années et quand j'ai vu cet événement arriver, connaissant certains des artistes, je lui ai envoyé un message avec les détails (je l'ai marqué sur un message FB) et il m'a répondu qu'il allait déjà partir. Je lui ai demandé s'il pouvait prendre quelques images pour que nous puissions publier un court article sur le projet, car je sais qu'il appuie et fait la promotion des arts et de la culture dans le Nord-Est, et c'est une excellente exposition de peinture contemporaine pour Middlesborough. Il s'est avéré qu'à mon insu, il connaissait déjà Gordon Dalton et qu'il travaillait avec lui auparavant - je n'en avais aucune idée !

"Mountain Size met en vedette des artistes de la Contemporary British Painting, sélectionnés par Gordon Dalton (Creative Factory), membre du conseil du CBP. L'exposition présente des artistes britanniques dont le travail a un rapport avec le paysage, d'un pays à l'autre, ou comme une inspiration plus abstraite. Le paysage est un point de départ, un sujet, avant que la spontanéité, la contradiction et la prise de décision ne commencent et la délicate question de pousser " de la boue colorée avec un bâton poilu ".

Tous les peintres impliqués sont directement liés à l'histoire, à l'héritage et aux traditions de la peinture elle-même. Cela ne signifie pas pour autant qu'ils sont séparés des réalités plus larges qui nous entourent ou d'un dialogue critique fructueux avec d'autres formes d'art, mais que la peinture elle-même est importante. Grandes peintures, petites peintures, peintures de "choses", pour ces artistes, la peinture elle-même est de la taille d'une montagne, une grande force apparemment immuable, mais qui est changeante avec le temps, l'histoire et le monde qui nous entoure."

Il s'agit d'une sélection très intéressante de peintures qui vont de pièces abstraites à différentes échelles, en passant par l'exploration du paysage tel qu'il est envisagé en surface, jusqu'à des œuvres techniques brillantes et représentatives, en passant par les motifs et les colllages. Les influences de la peinture britannique et européenne sont évidentes et référencées mais avec une réflexion académique contemporaine qui fournit une intention linguistique et un amour du médium qui permet une profonde contemplation de son impact continu.

Contemporary British Painting est une organisation dirigée par des artistes qui explore et promeut les tendances actuelles de la peinture britannique à travers des expositions collectives, des conférences, des publications et des dons de peintures aux musées d'art.
